About Me

These pages are normally a reflection of the author’s disadvantaged past, claims that they are someone that just could not fit the standard mold and persevered in the face of that strife. So, in that light let me share my story, one I like to call a life of unique mediocrity. (having done a lot, but nothing ever seeming to catch on.)

High School

I dropped out of high school after a meeting with a guidance counselor who couldn’t comprehend I was student that wanted challenging courses, not easy credits. Their “guidance” when I wanted to enroll in trigonometry the next year and was to tell me to re-take basic maths, just for the credits to pass. So, I dropped out. Within short order I passed the GED and was enrolled in college (including trigonometry) for the start of the next year’s semester.

As I approached age 18 I had a friendly scare and care visit from the local FBI field agents. A friendly reminder to get my sh*t together and stop goofing around online. I moved to Los Angeles shortly thereafter to commit my time and efforts into a fledgling data center.

Early Work

While working out of the Garland building in the early double-oughts (2000s). I put out a web-series of viral videos called office olympics (it was officeolympics.net, the contents of which have luckily been lost to time, some things on the internet in fact do fade away, there are only a few of these videos left still cycling around). That experiment in video comedy, required I learn video production, editing, as well as build and promote the website to show case the videos on (as this was in the days before YouTube.) I went on to build websites for communities on such banal topics as coffee, hardware hacking, and made occasional personal blogs (like this one). Sometimes a site got enough traction to earned a healthy side-income, but eventually they all faded away, overshadowed by social media giants like Reddit and FaceBook; people seemed to be using the web differently.

Infosec

Throughout all of the above, I have had a colorful history in the infosec field and hacker communities. Professionally, I spent some time as a researcher for a vulnerability lab, finding and writing exploits for all sorts of targets. That work was sandwiched in between leading security teams for two different hosting providers.

I became a leader and organizer for many events connected to information security, community and learning. I was part of the original OC2600 hacker meetup, I helped start and run Irvine Underground as an alternative meet up (more focused on learning/teaching skills). I gave my time to the DefCon community as a security Goon, loving my brother and sister goons so much I organized and ran multiple Goon Camps (which later became disconnect.camp, described in more detail below) to help peers within that community bond better.

I have the mildest of credits in a few open source projects. I gave contribution to scripts for the NMAP scripting engine, and indirectly (based on my coverage of an exploit) have credits in metasploit.

Of more substance, I have given over 30 public speaking presentations on many topics I have researched. Each presentation was a rush, and the process of sharing knowledge with peers is one I enjoy.

Popular Research

I was one of the original researchers which helped coin the term “juice jacking“, way back in 2012. The work highlighted the risks of a charge and data port being the same trust level. It has been featured by thousands of news publications since.

Interested in learning more about Juice Jacking? I wrote a detailed history on juice jacking for SecJuice over the 2019 holiday season. The original research was done with the Wall of Sheep.

Creating

Lastly, I would like to share some things of reasonable note which are more hobbies and side projects. This chapter of my life is still being written.

Disconnect Camp

I founded disconnect.camp, a conference/vacation that brings together people from tech and security backgrounds together to spend time away from their keyboards, and more time around each other.
